A review of captain phillips by chris montoya
Captain Phillips is based on the events that happened on April 8, 2009 on the American ship The Maersk Alabama, which was about 350 miles of the coast of Somalia, when the ship got attacked by Somalia pirates trying to hijack the ship for ransom. In the movie it shows that hijacking is a very common practice for the poor Somali people, it also shows that they are really successful in hijacking ships, in the movie it talks about how the Somali pirates got paid close to 10 million dollars for the last ship that they hijack.
The acting in the movie was excellent especially from the two major roles, Tom Hanks who played the role of Captain Phillips and Barkhad Abdi who plays the role of Muse the leader of the Somali pirates. In the movie Tom Hanks entire performance is one of the greatest in Hanks' prolific, varied career - a role that gives him a massive arc and the opportunity to show great range. Barkhad Abdi showcases a range from maniacal to empathetic to down-right ruthless in his first major acting role. The Director Paul Greengrass: who also directed United 93, Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum. Paul did an excellent job being able to capture such a dynamic, exhilarating reality-based movie thriller. I would not be surprised if Tom Hanks wins an Academy Award for best actor, Barhad Abdi wins one for best new actor and Director Paul Greengrass wins an Academy Award as well.
This film was excellent, it had action, drama, suspense and a happy ending, what else can you ask for in a movie. The best part of the movie to me was that it was based on true events, so a lot of the movie was true or pretty close. To me the ending was great because we got to see a little bit of how the actual Seal Team 6 would handle a situation like a boat hijacking. It also shows how good the Navy Seals are because they were able to handle this hijacking and not one American was killed, the only people that were killed were the Somali pirates and even at that they were able to keep one alive and get information from him.
